第14章 宜人风景Natural Scenery(4)

At the beginning of the 19th century the river was made navigable from Hamburg Fuhlsbüttel to the Krugkoppelbrücke in the district of Harvestehude. On the banks of the Alster private houses were built, in some cases with direct access to the water. However, the particularityparticularity n.特性 of the Alster is its growing into a large lake in the middle of the city and in this wise shaping, in a wonderful way, Hamburg,s city image.

The source of the river Alster begins in a fissure near HenstedtRhen north of Hamburg in SchleswigHolstein. The source area and the moor to the east are a nature reserve and are accessible by foot.

The Alster Path begins approximately 10km from the source of the river Alster at the “Heidkrug” pub on the B432 in Kayhude in SchleswigHolstein. After a short distance south along the B432 the signpostedsignpost n.路标 path turns off, on the left side of the road, to the river Alster. The path passes the Wulksfelder locks to continue over the Alster bridge through a residential area south to the mixed woodland of the source valley of the river Rodenbeker nature reserve.

In summer you can see on the “Auenalster” apart from the “Alsterdampfer” (engine driven ferry and sightseeing boats) countless numbers of sailing and rowing boats while along the lake,s path leading through the meadows, invite you to go for walks.

He who likes going for a little excursionexcursion n.远足, 游览, 短程旅行, 远足队, 离题, [物]偏移, 漂移 in a boat, can hire from a wide range of boats available from the boat lenders located along the lake,s shores. There are sailing and rowing boats, canoes or also pedal boats in which you can undertake your own trip. Or you take it easy by going on a round trip on a sightseeing boat.

The Englischer Garten

The Englischer Garten or “English Garden” is a large urban public park in northeast Munich, Germany. It was founded in 1789 by Benjamin Thompson, who is also known as Count von Rumford. With an area covering 3.7 km2 the Englischer Garten is one of the world,s largest urban public parks, even bigger than New York,s famous Central Park. The name refers to the style of gardening; the term “English garden” is used outside of the English speaking world to refer to the style of informal landscape gardening which was popular in the United Kingdom from the mid 18th century to the early 19th century, and is particularly associated with Capability Brown.

English Garden. This virtually endless park, which melds into the open countryside at Munich,s northern city limits, was designed for the Bavarian prince Karl Theodor by Benjamin Thompson, later Count Rumford, from Massachusetts, who fled America after having taken the wrong side during the War of Independence. The open, informal nature of the park - reminiscent of the rolling parklands with which English aristocratsaristocrat n.贵族 of the 18th century liked to surround their country homes - gave the park its name. It has a boating lake, four beer gardens, and a series of curious decorative and monumental constructions, including the Monopteros, a Greek temple designed by Leo von Klenze for King Ludwig I and built on an artificial hill in the southern section of the park. In the center of the park,s most popular beer garden is a Chinese pagodapagoda n.宝塔 erected in 1789. It was destroyed during the war and then reconstructed. The Chinese Tower beer garden is world famous, but the park has prettier places for sipping a beer: the Aumeister, for example, along the northern perimeter.

The Aumeister,s restaurant is in an early19thcentury hunting lodge. At the Seehaus, on the shore of the Kleinhesseloher See (lake), choose between a smart restaurant or a cozy Bierstube (beer tavern).

The Englischer Garten is a paradise for joggersjogger n .慢跑者,[印]撞纸机, cyclists, musicians, soccer players, sunbathers, dog owners, and, in winter, crosscountry skiers. The Munich Cricket Club grounds are in the southern section - and spectators are welcome. The park has designated areas for nude sunbathing - the Germans have a positively pagan attitude toward the sun - so don,t be surprised to see naked bodies bordering the flower beds and paths.

History

In 1789, at the hight of the French Revolution, to reduce the dissatisfactiondissatisfaction n.不满, 不平, 令人不满的事物 among the people, the Electoral Prince Karl Theodor ordered a public park to be built on the banks of the river Isar by Friedrich Ludwig Sckell. The populous were enthusiastic about the large landscape garden, laid in English style, imitating the natural flora without decorativedecorative adj.装饰的 plants and trimming . Today, covering approximately 4 km2 it is the largest park of any city of the world.

The Garden

From early morning till late in the night the park is filled with joggers, horsebackriders, bikers, baby carriages, dogs and lovers. Especially on sunny days, the southern part of the garden is full of life: sunbathers make themselves comfortable on the meadows alongsidealongside adv.在旁 prep.横靠 the stream, the “Eisbach”, or refresh themselves by taking a short swim. In the south, surfers train on and in the cold water. One can watch the lively scene of musicians, icecreamsellers, ball-or frisbee players, Brazilian Capoeira dancers and jugglers on foot, in a horse drawn carriage or on a Rickshawtour.

The small round temple “Monopterus” stands out. Further to the north one can enjoy a “Ma” Bavarian beer to the sound of a brass band with tourist and inhabitants beneath the Chinese tower. Those who prefer a more elegant atmosphere, can visit the beergarden at the “Seehaus” or feed the swans, geese and ducks from a rowing boat.

The northern part of the English garden is more peaceful with better possibilities for those who prefer to simply take a quiet walk or to relax upon the grass.
