Dave Freudenthal took office as Wyoming’s thirty－first governor on January 6，2003．Born in Thermopolis，Wyoming in 1950，the 55－year－old Democrat grew up on his family farm north of town．He is the seventh of eight children．
Before earning the title of “Gov．Dave，”Freudenthal served nearly eight years as the U．S．attorney（〈美〉律师）for Wyoming，nominated（推荐，命名）by former Governor Mike Sullivan and appointed by President Bill Clinton．He had earlier spent sixteen years running his own private law practice in Cheyenne，Wyoming，where he has made his home with his family for more than twenty years．
Freudenthal’s professional life has come full circle．Long before entering the private sector as an attorney，he worked for the state of Wyoming，beginning his employment in 1973as an economist for the state Department of Economic Planning and Development．He then joined Governor Ed Herschler’s core staff as state planning coordinator（协调者）in 1975before going on to open his one－man law practice in 1980．
While working for the state，Freudenthal simultaneously（同时地）earned a law degree from the University of Wyoming in 1980，following a bachelor’s degree in economics from Amherst（Massachusetts）College in 1973．
Gov．Dave and First Lady Nancy Freudenthal，herself a private attorney in Cheyenne，have four children：Donald；Hillary；Bret；and Katie．
State Bird州鸟

The Western Meadowlark（Sturnella Neglecta）was adopted as the State Bird on February 5，1927．Approximately（大约）the size of a robin，the meadowlark sports a yellow breast with a black bib（口水兜）over its mottled（使有斑点）brown body．These song birds are found from Wisconsin to Texas and westward to the Pacific．

The Indian paintbrush（Castilleja）is a native wildflower in the family Scrophulariaceae（Figwort Family）．The Indian Paintbrush or Painted Cup（Castilleja linariaefolia）was adopted as the State Flower on January 31，1917．The roots of the painted cups are partially parasitic（寄生的）on the roots of other green plants．Their true flowers are inconspicuous（不显眼的，不引人注意的），but are commonly enveloped by bright red flowerlike（像花的）bracts（［植］苞叶，苞）．
The Wyoming chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution supported the Indian paintbrush as Wyoming’s state flower．But Dr．Grace R．Hebard gets most of the credit for its adoption．She drafted the state flower bill and found a legislator willing to sponsor it．
This flower displays various shades of orange，red and sometimes yellow．The Castilleja grows in moist areas，dry areas，and sandy prairies．Its zones range from 3to 9．The seeds of the Indian Paintbrush usually germinate（发芽）in the fall and bloom（开花）the next spring without pre－treatment．The plant prefers full sun and／or small amounts of shade．The Indian paintbrush has the ability to grow and survive in serpentine（蜿蜒的）soils，which most species are not equipped to handle the stressful amounts of high magnesium（［化］镁），low calcium［［化］钙（元素符号Ca）］and overloaded amounts of metals such as chromium（铬）and nickel（［化］镍）．The height of the Indian paintbrush ranges from 1to 2feet tall．
The flowers are edible（可食用的）yet they must be eaten in small quantities．They will absorb selenium［［化］硒（非金属元素，符号Se，原子序34）］，a potentially toxic（有毒的），alkaline（［化］碱的，碱性的）mineral compound in the soil．Where high amounts of selenium in the soil is not present，Indain Paintbrush can be enjoyed in moderation with salads．Various tribes used the flowering parts as a paintbrush．The Chippewa Indians are know the use Indian Paintbrush as a medicine to treat rheumatism（风湿，风湿病）and as a bath rinse（冲洗）to make their hair glossy．Both applications are useful due to it’s selenium content．

The Wyoming State Flag，designed by Mrs．A．C．Keyes of Casper（formerly Miss Verna Keays of Buffalo），was adopted by the fourteenth legislature on January 31，1917．A bison（美洲野牛）on a blue field bordered in white and red．The state seal branded on the bison．The woman represents the state motto “Equal Rights”and the two men represent cattle ranchers and miners．The words “Livestock（家畜，牲畜）”，“Mines”，“Grains”and “Oil”represent Wyoming’s wealth．The eagle and shield show support for the United States．The dates 1869and 1890tell when Wyoming organized as a territory of the United States and when it became a state．
