第11章 DESIRE(3)

Tolerance, and an open mind are practical necessitiesof the dreamer of today. Those who are afraid of newideas are doomed before they start. Never has therebeen a time more favorable to pioneers than thepresent. True, there is no wild and woolly west tobe conquered, as in the days of the Covered Wagon;but there is a vast business, financial, and industrialworld to be remoulded and redirected along new andbetter lines.

In planning to acquire your share of the riches, letno one influence you to scorn the dreamer. To winthe big stakes in this changed world, you must catchthe spirit of the great pioneers of the past, whosedreams have given to civilization all that it has ofvalue, the spirit which serves as the life-blood ofour own country—your opportunity and mine, todevelop and market our talents.

Let us not forget, Columbus dreamed of an Unknown world, staked his life on the existence ofsuch a world, and discovered it!

Copernicus, the great astronomer, dreamed ofa multiplicity of worlds, and revealed them! Noone denounced him as “impractical” after he hadtriumphed. Instead, the world worshipped at hisshrine, thus proving once more that “SUCCESSREQUIRES NO APOLOGIES, FAILURE PERMITS NOALIBIS.”

If the thing you wish to do is right, and you believein it, go ahead and do it! Put your dream across, and never mind what “they” say if you meet withtemporary defeat, for “they,” perhaps, do not knowthat EVERY FAILURE BRINGS WITH IT THE SEED OFAN EQUIVALENT SUCCESS.

Henry Ford, poor and uneducated, dreamed of ahorseless carriage, went to work with what tools hepossessed, without waiting for opportunity to favorhim, and now evidence of his dream belts the entireearth. He has put more wheels into operation thanany man who ever lived, because he was not afraidto back his dreams.

Thomas Edison dreamed of a lamp that could beoperated by electricity, began where he stood to puthis dream into action, and despite more than tenthousand failures, he stood by that dream until hemade it a physical reality. Practical dreamers DONOT QUIT!

Whelan dreamed of a chain of cigar stores, transformed his dream into action, and now theUnited Cigar Stores occupy the best corners inAmerica.

Lincoln dreamed of freedom for the black slaves, put his dream into action, and barely missed livingto see a united North and South translate his dreaminto reality.

The Wright brothers dreamed of a machine thatwould fly through the air. Now one may see evidenceall over the world, that they dreamed soundly.

Marconi dreamed of a system for harnessing theintangible forces of the ether. Evidence that he didnot dream in vain, may be found in every wirelessand radio in the world. Moreover, Marconi’s dreambrought the humblest cabin, and the most statelymanor house side by side. It made the people ofevery nation on earth back-door neighbors. It gavethe President of the United States a medium bywhich he may talk to all the people of America atone time, and on short notice. It may interest you toknow that Marconi’s “friends” had him taken intocustody, and examined in a psychopathic hospital, when he announced he had discovered a principlethrough which he could send messages through theair, without the aid of wires, or other direct physicalmeans of communication. The dreamers of todayfare better.

The world has become accustomed to new discoveries. Nay, it has shown a willingness toreward the dreamer who gives the world a new idea.

“The greatest achievement was, at first, and for atime, but a dream.”

“The oak sleeps in the acorn. The bird waits in theegg, and in the highest vision of the soul, a wakingangel stirs. DREAMS ARE THE SEEDLINGS OFREALITY.”

Awake, arise, and assert yourself, you dreamers ofthe world. Your star is now in the ascendency. Theworld depression brought the opportunity you havebeen waiting for. It taught people humility, tolerance, and open-mindedness.

The world is filled with an abundance of

OPPORTUNITY which the dreamers of the past neverknew.

A BURNING DESIRE TO BE, AND TO DO is the starting point from which the dreamer must take off.

Dreams are not born of indifference, laziness, orlack of ambition.

The world no longer scoffs at the dreamer, norcalls him impractical. If you think it does, take a tripto Tennessee, and witness what a dreamer Presidenthas done in the way of harnessing, and using thegreat water power of America. A score of years ago, such a dream would have seemed like madness.

You have been disappointed, you have undergonedefeat during the depression, you have felt the greatheart within you crushed until it bled. Take courage, for these experiences have tempered the spiritualmetal of which you are made—they are assets ofincomparable value.

Remember, too, that all who succeed in life get offto a bad start, and pass through many heartbreakingstruggles before they “arrive.” The turning point inthe lives of those who succeed, usually comes atthe moment of some crisis, through which they areintroduced to their “other selves.”

John Bunyan wrote the Pilgrim’s Progress, whichis among the finest of all English literature, after hehad been confined in prison and sorely punished, because of his views on the subject of religion.

O. Henry discovered the genius which slept withinhis brain, after he had met with great misfortune, andwas confined in a prison cell, in Columbus, Ohio.

Being FORCED, through misfortune, to becomeacquainted with his “other self,” and to use hisIMAGINATION, he discovered himself to be a greatauthor instead of a miserable criminal and outcast.

Strange and varied are the ways of life, and strangerstill are the ways of Infinite Intelligence, throughwhich men are sometimes forced to undergo all sortsof punishment before discovering their own brains, and their own capacity to create useful ideas throughimagination.
