第106章 Emperor Kangxi’s Southern Inspection Tour-Wang Hui

Emperor Kangxi’s Southern Inspection Tour(the first volume), a Qing Dynasty(1644?1911) hand scroll by Wang Hui and other court painters, inkand color on silk, 67.8cm×1555cm, in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing.

Wa n g H u i ( 1 6 3 2.1 7 1 7 ) w a s a n o u t s t a n d i n g landscape painter in the early Qing Dynasty. Born in a calligraphy and painting family, he is one of“Six Great Painters in the Early Qing Dynasty” and one of “Four Great Wang-surnamed Painters.” The First Volume of Emperor Kangxi’s Southern Inspection Tour was drawn at imperial order and based on the southern China tour of Xuan Ye, Emperor Kangxi in the twenty eighth year of the Kangxi reign. Wang Hui was the drafter and a major author of the album. The first volume was finished by him in 1693, the thirty second year of the Kangxi reign. It cost six years for other painters to complete other parts. Inheriting the traditions of Chinese scrolls and the merits of such work like Peace Reigns over River, Wang Hui stressed both realistic and artistic creations, ushering the creation of Emperor Qianlong’s Southern Inspection Tour and Prosperity of Suzhou. This painting, with an imposing grandeur and complete composition,delicate brushwork and florid colors, is a masterpiece of imperial-court painting in the Qing Dynasty. It is also rare painting in the history of Chinese calligraphy and art, and rare historical material. The first volume mainly depicts the scene that Xuan Ye left Beijing on January 8th(in Chinese lunar calendar), the twentyeighth year of the Kangxi reign.

Album of Landscape and Flower Paintings was drawn by Wang Hui and Yun Shouping when they visited Yixing, Jiangsu Province during the reign of Emperor Kangxi. Wang Hui drew landscape, while Yun Shouping painted flowers. There are a total of 12 pieces in the album and here are four of them. They have precise composition, delicate brushwork and extraordinary verve.
