第108章 Flowers-YunShouping

Flowers, a Qing Dynasty(1644.1911) hanging scroll by Yun Shouping, ink and color on silk, 116.5cm×54.2cm, in the collection of the Palace Museum, Taipei.

Yun Shouping(1633.1690), a famous painter in the Qing Dynasty, was good at painting landscapes and flowers. Wang Shimin, Wang Jian, Wang Hui, Wang Yuanqi, Wu Li and Yun Shouping were acclaimed as “Six Great Painters in the Early Qing Dynasty.” Yun Shouping founded “Changzhou school of painting,” which was also called “Yun school of painting” or “Piling school of painting.”

The inscription of this painting imitates that of Northern Song Dynasty painters. It draws old trees, peonies and yulan magnolias. It has rational composition, delicate brushwork and bright colors. The bright colored flower drives away melancholy of branches and leaves, and is pleasing to both the eye and the mind.
