第36章 Paintings in the Yuan Dynasty1279-1368

Yuan Dynasty(1279.1368)artists followed techniques and styles of the previous dynasty and created a new atmosphere in less than 100 years. Literati painting(painting by scholars and officials), developed by leaps and bounds, became an important part of Yuan Dynasty paintings. Yuan artists advocated learning from ancient great artists and stressed the use of calligraphy and display of author’s interests in painting. Majority of painters in early Yuan Dynasty, Zhao Mengfu for example, had living experiences in the Song Dynasty. They exerted far-reaching impacts on painting art of the whole Yuan Dynasty and set good examples for the development of literati painting in later ages. As for flower-and-bird painting, Qian Xuan was a representative. “Four Great Landscapists in the Yuan Dynasty” 。 Wu Zhen, Ni Zan, Huang Gongwang and Wang Meng.all generated great impacts on artists of later ages. Important artistic works in the Yuan Dynasty included A Red Dressed Monk from the Western Regions, Pavilion of Prince Teng, Pear Flowers, Seclusive Life in Mountain, Man Leading a Horse, coming Rains in Stream and Mountain, Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains, Fisherman, Dwelling in Waterside and Bamboo Grove, Rongxi Secluded Hut, Dwelling in Seclusion in the Qingbian Mountain, Hermit Fisherman on Dongting and Plum Blossoms in Early Spring.
