Palace Ladies Wearing Flowered Headdresses, a Tang Dynasty(618.907) hand scroll by Zhou Fang, ink and color on silk, 46cm×180cm, in the collection of Liaoning Provincial Museum, Shenyang.
Zhou Fang, styling himself Zhonglang, was a painter in the early period of the Tang Dynasty. He learned from well-known painter Zhang Xuan in his early years and was proficient at drawing beauties and images of Buddha.
This painting depicts the scene that court ladies visit a garden and enjoy flowers when spring is changing into summer. There are a total of six ladies, each having plump body, gorgeous clothes and leisured countenance. It reflects a scene of court ladies’ life in the Tang Dynasty. With gaily colors, delicate and smooth lines, it is another great beauty painting in the Tang Dynasty and a national cultural treasure.
