Massachusetts Institute of Technology， commonly referred to as MIT， is a private research university located in Cambridge， Massachusetts， United States， across the Charles River from downtown Boston， founded in 1861 in response to the increasing industrialization of the United States.MIT is independent， coeducational， and privately endowed. Today MIT is a world-class educational institution. Teaching and research， with relevance to the practical world as a guiding principle， continue to be its primary purpose. MIT is dedicated to providing its students with an education that combines rigorous academic study and the excitement of discovery with the support and intellectual stimulation of a diverse campus community. System： MIT has f ive schools and one college， containing a total of 34 academic departments， divisions， and degree-granting programs， as well as numerous interdisciplinary centers， laboratories， and programs whose work cuts across traditional departmental boundaries， with a strong emphasis on scientific， engineering， and technological education and research.Among its graduate schools are the highly ranked School of Engineering and Sloan School of Management， in addition to strong programs in economics， psychology， biology， chemistry， earth sciences， physics， and mathematics.
Types of financial aid： Students who wish to attend MIT can get scholarships to cover tuition and housing costs. Scholarships are like grants， in that they don"t have to be paid back. MIT students should be aware that if a good grade-point average is not maintained， they could lose their scholarship.MIT offers no merit-based aid； its students receive merit-based aid from other sources.The MIT loan is available to undergraduate students based on need.Student jobs are not based on financial need and are available to all undergraduate and graduate students.The admissions process at MIT is need-blind， so a Financial Aid application will not affect your chances of being admitted to MIT.
