5.美国对自己的文化和意识形态充满自信，对此我们十分赞赏和尊重，一个没有自信力的民族是没有前途的。当然“家家都有一本难念的经”，美国也有自己各式各样的社会问题。美国还远不是人类理想的社会。美国的最佳选择应该是专心致志地努力自我完善。如果美国真正好，应该相信真理的力量，中国人民会自动学习的。中国人是一个好学的民族。当代中国，几乎世界各国稍有影响的思潮都已转了一圈；今日中国，稍有影响的理论著作都已或正在中国出版。中国人会择其善而从之。但是，如果美国不致力于完善自己，却要强制中国接受一切，中国人自然会问：“难道这就是美国的人权和民主？”那就只会导致冲突。
谁也别指望中国会咽下任何强加给她的苦果。
八、中国富强了会对美国构成威胁吗？
1.富强就注定是一种威胁吗？美国现在是世界第一强国，是否意味着她今日威胁着全世界？日本、欧洲现在都很富强，是否威胁着美国？中国是一个爱好和平的国家，这已为上千年的历史所证实。中华民族是一个善良的民族，她的数以千万计的人民走向世界，并与各国人民友好相处，诚实劳动，从未建立过任何殖民地。近代中国饱受欺凌，特别珍惜世界和平友谊。霸权是与社会主义本质不相容的，搞霸权的假社会主义已自食其果了，这就是中国已公开宣布永远不称霸的道理。
不妨列举一个数字加以说明，如果中国有10％的人口，即1.2亿人富裕到有经济能力前往美国和世界旅游，那不就成为美国和世界经济发展的一个火车头？反之，如果中国贫困与****，有10％的人口成为难民流向世界，那不是对全世界一项难以估量的威胁吗？
2.中国人口众多，人均资源并不丰富，历史负担与欠债大多，因此，今日中国虽有巨大发展，但仍然是一个十分贫穷落后的发展中国家，用中国贫穷的标准计算，仍有六七千万人未得温饱。中国要专心致志于经济建设和社会进步，到下世纪中叶才能达到中等发达国家的水平。虽然美国兰德公司1995年预测中国国内生产总值将在2006年超过美国，但中国人口是美国人口的5倍，要人均达到美国的水平，恐怕至少100年。更重要的，中国清醒地认识到，不仅是量的差距，更有质的差距，我们高速发展的产值基本上还是“工业化”的产值。而美国是高新技术“信息化”的产值，这是一个历史时代的差距！所以，******说，中国人要作好几代人、十几代人、几十代人持续努力的准备。
至于军事力量，中国只有有限的自卫能力，无论热核武器，还是激光制导和电子武器……都不是可以与美国比拟的。中国军费绝对值只有美国的1/30，人均值就更少了。任何有正常思维能力的人，谁能相信中国军事力量会威胁到强大的美国。
退一万步说，中国要具有威胁美国的力量也要在22世纪以后。那已是我们孙子、曾孙子的事情了。我们应该相信我们100年后的子孙.将具有更高的智慧和更深刻的理性，他门将会找到更进一步巩固和发展中美两国和平友好合作的途径和措施来。
问题在于我们留给他们一份什么遗产。这是真正的历史性选择！如果我们跨世纪的这代人留给我们子孙一份中美友好合作的坚实基础，那么我相信他门一定会在前辈的基础上，建立起宏伟的中美友好合作大厦。
九、迎接中美友好合作的新世纪
综合以上，我的结论是21世纪中美关系应该选择友好合作，全面友好合作。这是两国21世纪根本的战略利益之所在。同时，这个选择是建立在充分理性分析的基础之上的，因而也是可行的，甚至可以说是最可行的，只要有足够的政治远见和政治魄力。
事实上，中美关系友好合作的势头一直在潜行着，例如双边贸易额从1990年的200亿美元上升到1995年的573亿美元，五年内增长了将近一倍半。如果政治家们顺从历史潮流前进，中美友好合作的前景，不是可以期待的吗？
如果政治家们非理性地选择对抗，那无论对于中国，还是美国，都是不利的，甚至是一场灾难。
让我们大家共同努力，迎接一个中美友好合作的新世纪，一个中国和美国都繁荣和进步的新世纪。
也许有人会笑我是一个书生的幻想。对于这一指责，我乐意接受。我是搞自然科学研究出身的，我知道任何创造发明都是从幻想开始的。如果我撒下的是一颗空瘪的种子，自然会消失在历史的尘埃之中；如果我播下了真正的种子，我相信总有发芽和茁壮成长的一天。
