Peacocks in a Loquat Tree, a Song Dynasty(960.1279) painting by Cui Bai, ink and color on silk, 183.1cm×109.8cm, in the collection of the Palace Museum, Taipei.
Cui Bai(1024.1068), a Song Dynasty painter, was skillful at drawing flowers, birds and characters(including religious figures and historical stories)。 It is a rare flower-and-bird painting handed down to today. Under a fruited loquat tree, two peacocks, one in upper and one in lower position, look into each other. Two sparrows stop at branches and one is flying. Decorated with bamboo, rocks, flowers and grass, it constitutes a harmonious scene.
As the seal imprint shows, this painting was once preserved in imperial palaces of the Song, Ming and Qing dynasties, which makes it much more valuable.
