Due to the event, an anti-foreign forces movement appeared in whole China and the participants were as high as 12 million. In the name of All China Federation of Trade Union (ACFTU), the communists Deng Zhongxia and Su Zhaozheng convened a joint conference with all labour unions and founded Hongkong Workers’ League to stage a strike. From June 19, about 20 thousands workers left their jobs and returned to Guangzhou in three days. At the same time, students began to boycott classes.

All labour unions in Hongkong asserted several solemn requests: (1) Support the 17 requirements from Shanghai industry and commerce federation, including withdrawing the foreign forces from China; (2) Hongkong British Authorities should ensure that Chinese had the freedom and rights of speech, assembly and association.

However, Hongkong British Authorities gave no reply to these requirements. On June 19, 1925, Hong Kong Seamen’s Union and Hong Kong trams union first announced the strikes, other unions made responses immediately. In spite of the threats from British imperialism, the workers on strike went back to Guangzhou.

On June 23, strikers and people from all circles gatherd in East Jiaochang in Guangzhou to memorial the dead compatriots in Shanghai, protested Imperialist invading and held a demonstration. When the parade approached Shaji Road, suddenly British and French policemen began to shoot the parade with machine gun. More 50 people died on the spot and 170 plus people were heavily injured.

This massacre further aroused national outrage all over China, more and more workers jonined the strike. Up to the end of June, the total number of Canton-Hong Kong striker was 250,000.

Under the leadership of the communist party of China, all the strikers united as one and fighted against imperialists and warlords, making great contribution to the unification of Guangdong revolutionary base.In the summer of 1926, the Revolutionary State made Northern Expedition and thousands of workers went to the front which provided powerful support to the victory of Northern Expedition.

According to the changed situations, Canton-Hong Kong strike committee announced an end to the strike. This strike lasted 16 months, which was unprecedented in worker’s movements both in China and the rest of the world.
