Do you know Su Min School, which is located in Nan Xiang Town, far away from the prosperity1 of the downtown? But surely you know Jazz, one of the most charming2 and popular kinds of music.

“Blue Sky” Jazz Band, the first jazz band founded by students in China, has successfully performed in Yihai Theatre, appeared in a popular TV show, Dream Theatre on CCTV, and taken part in the Shanghai Art Festival. Now the jazz band has become a credit to Su Min School.

Young as these jazz players are, the training they are receiving is formal and systematic3. From Tuesday to Thursday, they have to arrive at school at 7:00 am for rehearsal4, one hour earlier than the other students, plus the whole Saturday mornings. On Monday afternoons professional jazz players from downtown come to give the students some instruction on an individual5 basis and all the students try their best to take advantage of the chance to improve their skills.

During the rehearsal, a beautiful girl was beating the drum rhythmically6. She told me that she was not only good at the drum and a traditional Chinese musical instrument-Zheng, she was also a top student in her class. Actually all the members of the band do very well in their studies, so thats why their parents dont object to their rehearsals. The students themselves also believe that this hobby is not just for fun but can at the same time cultivate7 their mind. “We hope our students can receive excellent education and develop in an allround way,” said Mrs Tang, headmaster of Su Min School.

All the teachers and students of Su Min School are proud of their jazz band. They tell the world with their music that jazz is for everyone and they play it not only for fun but for real.
