ThequestforthegoldenapplesinvolvedHerculesinmanywanderingsandadventures.MeetingatlastwiththeseagodNereus,andenquiringofhimwherethegoldenapplesweretobefound,hewastoldtoseekoutPrometheus,whowoulddirecthimtothespotwheretheHesperidesdwelt.NowPrometheus,thesonofaTitancalledIapetus,hadinformerdaysdonegreatservicetomankind,for,seeingthatmanhadallgiftssavethegiftoffire,hehadstolenalightedbrandfromOlympus,andhadborneittomenupontheearth.赫拉克勒斯长途跋涉历尽千险寻找着金苹果。最后他遇到海神涅柔斯,向人询问何处可以找到金苹果。涅柔斯让他去找普罗米修斯,普罗米修斯知晓赫斯珀里得斯四个女儿居住的地方。普罗米修斯是提坦伊阿珀托斯的儿子,他曾对人类作出过巨大贡献。当他看到人类已有了一切惟独缺火时,就从奥林匹斯山偷了一块燃烧的木头,送给地球上的人类。

Forthisservicemanygenerationsofmankindhadblessedhim;butJupiter,inangeratthetheft,hadcausedPrometheustobechainedtoarockintheCaucasianmountains.Thereahungryvulturefeddailyonhisliver,givinghimunspeakablepain;whileatnight,asthevulturevulturen.秃鹰,贪婪的人slept,thelivergrewwholeagain.SothattheagoniesofPrometheuswereneverended;andthesoundofhislamentationsdrownedthehymnsinhispraisewhicharosefromtheearthbelow.为此人类世世代代都感激他。但是朱庇特对他的偷窃行径非常恼火,用铁链将普罗米修斯锁在高加索山的悬崖上。那儿有一只饥饿的兀鹰每日啄食他的肝脏,给他带来难言痛苦。但是一到晚间,那只兀鹰休息时,他的肝脏又恢复原样。因此普罗米修斯的痛苦无休无止。他痛苦的呻吟甚至淹没了从下面传来的人们唱给他的赞歌。

Aftermanydaysoftravel,HerculescameinsightoftheCaucasianmountains,andatoncemadehiswaytothespotwheremightyPrometheuswaschained.Fromafaroff,Herculesheardthegroansofpainwhichrenttheair;andthere,ontheedgeofahugechasm,hesawtheTitanhimself,writhinginagony.Abovehimablackvulturehoveredwithspreadwings,andthesharpbeakgnawedcontinuallyintoPrometheussside,whiletheredbloodrandownhismuscularlimbs,overtheironchains,andontotherocksthemselves.经过数日跋涉,高加索山终于映入眼帘,赫拉克勒斯立即快步奔向伟大的普罗米修斯被缚的地点。远远地,赫拉克勒斯就能听到痛苦的呻吟声震云霄,就在那儿,在悬崖边上,他看到这位提坦在痛苦中翻腾、扭动。在他的上方,一只黑色的兀鹰展翅盘旋,不时地用那尖利的嘴刁啄普罗米修斯侧部。鲜血沿着他健壮的四肢,流过铁链,滴在崖石上。

Seeingthispiteoussight,Herculesatonceliftedhisbow,andfittedoneofhispoisonedarrows.Theshaftsped,andthevulture,withwildwingsconvulsed,gaveashrillcryandsankdowntothebottomofthechasmchasmn.深坑,裂口,whereitsoonceaseditsstrugglesandlaystill.ThenHerculesclimbedtowherePrometheusstood,andseizinginhispowerfulgraspthechainswhichboundtheTitan,hesnappedthemonebyone.目睹这悲惨的情景,赫拉克勒斯立即端起他的弓,装上一只毒箭。箭飞射出去,兀鹰双翅猛烈抽动,尖叫一声,跌落在悬崖的底部,一会儿就停止挣扎,一动不动地躺在那里。接着赫拉克勒斯爬上普罗米修斯站立的地方,用力抓住那些束缚提坦的锁链,把它们一一折断。

Prometheusbreathed,andstretchedhislimbs,andslowlysavoredhisnewfoundfreedom.Herculesspoke.“GreatPrometheus,loverofmankind,forwhosesakeyoubravedthewrathofallpowerfulJupiter,andsufferedonthisrockforsolong,atlastyouhavethelibertywhichisyourdue.Butnowyoumusthelpme,asIhavehelpedyou,andtellmewhereImayfindthegoldenapplesoftheHesperides.”

普罗米修斯长叹一口气,伸展四肢,慢慢地体味着这重新获得的自由。赫拉克勒斯说:“伟大的普罗米修斯,人类的恩人,为了人类的利益,你不惜冒犯万能的朱庇特,为此你长久被困在这块岩石上,备受折磨,你终于获得了你应有自由。现在请你协助我,就像我帮助你一样,告诉我何处可以找到赫斯珀里得斯的四个女儿看守的金苹果。”

Prometheusanswered:“Youhaveindeedbroughtanendtoallmysufferings,andinreturnforyourhelpIwilltellyouwhatIknowofthegoldenapples.YoumustseekoutmybrotherAtlas,andaskhimtofetchtheapplesforyou.”

普罗米修斯说:“你的确解除了我的痛苦,为了报答你,我将尽我所知告诉你有关金苹果的信息。你必须找到我的兄弟阿特拉斯,请他帮你取得金苹果。”
