朱莉安娜（Julia Roberts朱莉娅·罗伯茨饰演）与迈克尔（Dermot Mulroney德莫特·穆罗尼饰演）大学时曾经是亲密朋友，两人约定28岁如果还都是单身，就结为夫妻。眼看28岁生日即将来临，迈克尔突然打电话通知朱莉安娜他要结婚了，朱莉安娜这时才发现——新娘不是她，而是一位青春可爱的富家千金金伯莉（Cameron Diaz卡梅隆·迪亚斯饰演），并且邀请朱莉安娜做伴娘。为了抢回 爱人，朱莉安娜使出浑身解数试图阻止这场婚礼，她拉着这对情侣去唱卡拉OK，想让他们因为兴趣不同而吵架；然后带着好友乔治（Rupert Everett鲁珀特·埃弗里特饰演）故意在迈克尔面前装成一对情侣，想引起迈克尔的妒忌。但最终，朱莉安娜选择了放弃。她在好友乔治的帮助下，重新认识了爱的意义。
